The teams complained because one of the measures was to reduce costs and with more events that was difficult. But the calendar was also extended to 23 Grand Prixs. F1, after its success, wanted to increase that to six. There was a lot of debate between the teams, the FIA and Liberty about this. The top eight in the 'sprint race' will therefore have the opportunity to score points: first, eight points second, seven third, six fourth, five fifth, four sixth, three seventh, two and eighth, one. This has changed the most as on Saturday, 36 points will be awarded to the top eight riders, compared to six on Saturday. In 2021, only the podium finishers in the sprint race scored points (3-2-1 points respectively). For statistical purposes this is also relevant.

On Sunday, the winner of the sprint race will start first in the feature race, not the driver who finished first on Friday. In 2021, the polesitter was the winner of the sprint race. Unlike last year, the fastest driver in Friday's qualifying session will be officially awarded pole position. There will be no podium ceremony, but the winner will receive a trophy. In fact, it is planned to be displayed on the screen as ' F1 Sprint'. It is no longer called 'sprint qualifying' but 'sprint race'. It may seem like a minor point, but F1 has decided to change the name to give it more importance. But what has changed from 2021 to 2022 in these new sprint races? The name

On Sunday, the traditional race will take place on Sunday over 63 laps. It will last 21 laps, or around half an hour if there are no red flags. Then, in the afternoon, the sprint race will take place at 16:30 local time. On Saturday morning, there will be another free practice session, Free Practice 2, and no Free Practice 3. So, in the afternoon there will be no Free Practice 2, but instead the qualifying session, with Q1, Q2 and Q3, which is normally done on Saturdays to determine the grid.

To start with, there will only be one free practice session on Friday lasting one hour. At Imola this weekend, the first of the sprint races to be held this year will take place. Therefore, for 2022 it has been retained, although changes have been made to bring it more in line with the wishes of the teams, the competitors and the fans themselves. It provided more excitement, overtaking and surprises.

The formula was successful: it appealed to fans and to almost all the drivers and teams. F1 in 2021 saw a unique milestone in over 70 years of racing, with the introduction of sprint races on Saturdays that would determine the grid for the Sunday race.
